Cannon Babysits

This weekend Cannon got his wish to have a dog. He babysat Victor, a 7-year-old fox terrier, for 2 days. Eric mentioned Cannon's wish for a dog to a guy at work who happened to need a dog sitter for the weekend. Victor is a very good dog, trained very well. He only barked at us a little when he wasn't done playing fetch but we were. He never niped at the kids. His only downfall is his incredible energy level. It seems like we played with that dog all day Saturday and for as long as we were home on Sunday and still he wanted to play. If we didn't take the ball away and hide it he would bring it to the feet of someone and then just stare at the ball so hard, his tail up and body tensed with energy, as if willing it into your hand so you would play with him. On Sunday while we were at church Victor had to spend the 3 hour block in his kennel. So after lunch we all walked over to the jr. high to try to wear the dog out. Eric was throwing the ball as far as he could, the dog must have run miles, but he still wanted to play when we got home.

Having a dog for 2 days wasn't quite long enough for Cannon but it was pleanty long enough for me. This dog was almost like an additional child because he wanted so much attention, but I didn't feel bad ignoring him when he was bringing the ball to my feet while I was in the kitchen. The additional dirt level made me glad that we only had 2 days with him. Laine never warmed up to Victor, so I held her a lot more than usual. Ridge is very wary of dogs but he didn't mind this one so much because he was so good at obeying commands. So I suppose if Victor needs another babysitter, we'll let him come again.

That is one cute picture! Cannon is a natural. Maybe one day he'll grow up to be a dog breeder, or one of those guys who shows dogs or even the next dog trainer like that guy on Oprah, wouldn't that be cool!

Paige, I can totally sympathize with you. Our dog, Maddie, was a mix of a black lab and a Jack Russell terrier, so she had a ton of energy too. In fact, the only way I could ever tire her out was to take her backpacking with us. By the end of the second day or so, she was actually tired enough to stay with us on the trail and not run circles around us exploring while we hiked! The day after our Sawtooths trip as we were packing up to go home, she actually appeared to be sore as she slowly made her way out to the car, sat in her kennel, and didn't go anywhere while we packed up.

I love this picture of Cannon...so cute. Dogs are a lot of work, but he looks like he can handle himself. I'll have to bring Cabo by one day for a real test of how much he wants a dog!

ps. I'm gonna drop off some Samoas for you tomorrow!

That picture is worth it all--what a cute little boy! Maybe you could interest him in raising pigeons like his dad did--that's a different fun experience!
