So over the past few weeks Eric has become addicted to Craig's list. He thought it would be a good idea, and it was, to sell some of the things around our house that we aren't using. So he sold some tires, a bike trainer, and a few other things that I can't recall now, and then yesterday he sold our bed. Yes, the bed that we sleep in, or slept in, every night.
I should clarify that he did ask me if he could list the bed. I said no at first and kept saying no but finally I gave in, because, after all, who would want to buy a used bed from someone they didn't know? It certainly isn't something that I would want to buy from a stranger. I'd buy one from a friend whose home I had been into and knew it wasn't infested with crawlies, or borrow one from a family member like we did when we were first married -- both safe options. But I wouldn't, as in the case of our bed, call up the seller and ask:
"Is it in pretty good condition?"
E: yes, the mattress tags are off and there is a stain from water damage at one end. (we bought it from a warehouse sale)
buyer: I'll take it. You said you could deliver it for an extra charge?
E: Sure, I'll drive it to Bellevue tomorrow morning for $20 extra.
That's it. They bought it sight unseen, didn't even test it out before paying $125 + $20 for delivery. I agreed he could list it because I didn't think anyone would want to buy it. I didn't think anyone would want to take it for free, it is a used mattress.
There should be some back story here: We do want to buy a new mattress; Eric's back has been sore lately; there was a sag in the mattress so when Eric was in bed next to me it created a slope in his direction and flipping it didn't help it go back into form. So yes, we did need to get a new mattress but we hadn't been out looking for one yet, we only talked to our friends about how we could get one through them for cheaper than the stores. But that's okay -- we have a double bed up in the attic!
Let's compare the dimensions of these two beds:
California King: 72" x 84"
Double or full: 53" x 75"
Are you thinking, but wait, isn't Eric is longer than the double bed? You are right. Eric is 78" long and his feet hang off the bed. And now let's compare the feel of the mattresses:
California King: pillowtop, soft as a feather
Double: stiff as a board
Eric slept so well. He says he is more comfortable with is feet hanging off the bed and sleeping on something so stiff. I had gotten quite used to sleeping on that huge pillowtop. Last night I missed it, a lot.
