IDW

Yesterday we spent the afternoon at the beach enjoying the glorious summer heat we are finally getting. Ridge always brings the big shovel to the beach. He beat us down the stairs and started working right away on a dam. At this beach, Carkeek park, there is a section where a creek runs off in to the sand and creates a "river" as the kids call it. They enjoy playing in this part more than the water from the Sound.

So, Ridge set to work making a dam since a large driftwood log was already blocking the runoff from the creek. A couple of other boys asked him if they could help and by the time the rest of us got down the stairs they were all hard at work. They did this for at least an hour until a train came by and the boys ran to the stairs to get an up-close look at the passing iron giant.

When they got back down the stairs there were three girls wrecking the dam. Ridge asked them, "what the heck are you doing?" And explained that they were working on a dam. The other boys did nothing. One of the girls was a young teenager and probably intimidated the others but since Ridge is still at the age where making a dirt and rock wall is more important than impressing older girls, he got in their faces.

The girls explained that it wasn't good for the environment for water to stay in one place so they were wrecking their dam. Ridge then explained that the tide would come in later and wreck it so they could stop what they were doing. He also told them that there were two other dams at the end of the river that they could go wreck instead. The girls kept at it, but so did the boys. They were lugging big rocks from one end of the river to the other. Ridge brought a big rock over and told them, "you'd better move, I'm going to drop this." The girls didn't move and Ridge dropped the rock and splashed them. They moved soon after that.

Ridge later told me that he named the girls the "International Dam Wreckers" and had fun laughing with Cannon imagining the trouble they probably caused for other boys.

It was a good day at the beach. Sunny in Seattle. You can't beat it.

So glad you write in detail on your blog. It will be a funny story one day to read back on. So smart of you to head to the beach. Hope your sunny weather sticks around for awhile! Yay summer!

Oh that is hilarious! Good for Ridge for standing up for himself! I loved the part where he drops the big rock and splashes them. It just goes to show that there are consequences for being IDW's.
