no backup

Yup, the laptop started making awful sounds the other night and then it was dead. How sick to my stomach to I feel about it? Very. It wasn't like loosing an appendage, I'm not that dependent on it, but it has become an extra limb, of sorts, and I'm feeling its loss. A lot of pictures are stored on it, I know, I should have been backing up our hard drive. I was waiting for Eric to do it, he's more computer savvy than I am, but he didn't think about that side of things and I did, I just didn't tell him to do it, assumed he could read my mind and just knew that he should. Classic husband/wife non-communication on my part. A lot of photos and family videos will be lost, that's what makes me feel ill. I do have some consolation in that I keep a blog and usually I just post the best photos of the bunch. I've thought of the pioneers again, how did those moms remember their babies? Mostly memories and journals and then a picture or two, those stiff black and white images. I'm still pretty lucky. But I'm going to figure out a backup system. Lesson learned. And don't worry, my 50,000 words of mush novel are safe, backed up on google.

The blog image I've used forever was on the laptop. I've been meaning to redo it anyway, please pardon my dust.

oooh. sickness. I have a friend who is in the process of trying to retrieve my photo's and everything off of the disks in our hard drive (since the motor died in october)...I'll ask him about your situation. Who knows-maybe he has some ideas. Probably not but I'll ask anyway.

That happened to Stacie's computer. Some geek guys were able to retrieve all of her photos. It wasn't cheap, but they did it.

I am so sorry, Paige. The same thing happened to my laptop and I think I may have cried. I tried to get some items recovered, but the hard drive was shot. I guess backing things up really is a good idea.

We do have an IT guy in the family -- Eric's brother, Marc. We sent the laptop to him and he is going to replace the hard drive and try to get the data if he can. We'll see. It is so great to have someone we know to send it to. He was mad at Eric -- his own brother not backing up his files!

I am sorry to hear about your computer. I sort of know how you feel. Our camera was stolen in San Fran. and we lost so many pictures. I was sick!

The beach at Christmas was wonderful. I really don't miss the drizzle of Seattle; although sometimes I yearn for the little things of the area.

We saw Kent and Nellie. That was fun!

Oh that brings back painful memories. I started a journal when I was pregnant with Christopher, through his first year and when my computer crashed I lost the entire thing. Talk about tears. Ugh.

I feel your pain, I truly do. I hope your IT guy can help you recover your data and pictures!

I'm so sorry! that is the worst! We videotaped Katie's first few moments of life and the video camera ate them. I felt just sick, so I hope you can get some stuff back. my friend tired some disks and another went to a computer repair shop and paid a ton of money, but said it was worth it. Thank goodness you have the blog!
