Glamet, and coupons

Saving 30 dollars on a haircut is not worth 30 dollars. I now sport a haircut that isn't completely terrible but it isn't good either. It isn't at all what I asked for but Eric told me that he liked in on Saturday night. I really needed a trim because I haven't had a haircut since July. I had decided that I'd grow my hair out for a while because I can't seem to manage time to get to the salon but when you need a trim, you need a trim.

So I went to a place in our neighborhood where I take the boys. These ladies, I'm sorry I don't know what country they are from but they are Asian, do a great job with the boys' hair as long as I show them a picture. I didn't have a picture to show them but I didn't think it would be difficult, just a trim. That's what I said when they asked, "I need my hair trimmed."

The younger one asked if it was okay that she trim my hair. Of course, I had no problem with that. But then I said the key word that erased out everything I had said: layers. I asked for the layers, very much grown out but still present, be cut a bit shorter to lighten my heavy hair. I told her I'm growing it out and just wanted to trim off the unhealthy ends. But she heard layers, got excited and gave me layers. By the time I realized how much she was cutting off it was too late. And now I have a cut that I am calling the Glamet -- the Glamorous Mullet. Because it isn't a terrible haircut, it probably looks just like one of the pictures in her photo book, but that's all I can think when I try to style it, "I have a mullet," so maybe it is a terrible haircut. I probably shouldn't say this because now everyone who knows me and sees me will think "it does look like a mullet." If I can't stand it I'll have to get it chopped off at the back, or do it myself. And then wait 6 months for another haircut.

So speaking of saving money and not saving money, I went to a coupon class hosted by a gal from church who is a coupon queen, has reduced their household budget by 60%. I went and thought she had some good things to say, good tips to try. I finally remembered to get the Sunday paper last week, we don't subscribe, clipped all the coupons like she said, tried to plan my meals around the grocery sales. I'm just coupon-challenged because I think I saved $3 with by coupons but I spent way too much time in the grocery store. Those $3 were not worth the extra shopping time or the clipping time. I need a major tutuorial on shopping for the deals in order to make it worthwhile to me. And now the Sunday paper from yesterday is still sitting on the dining room bench, coupons untouched. I know I shouldn't give up this easily but I have bathrooms to clean, laundry to fold and this blog to write! And I have a Glamet so I'm really not in the mood.

Oh Paige, you crack me up. Come on where's the photo?!
Sunday at church I had this older sister comment to me that she loved my haircut and would love to get hers done just like it. She asked me where I go and even got out a pen and paper to write down the salon name, address and name of the hair stylist. Then she asked me how much she charged. This made me very nervous but I didn't know how to avoid answering her, so I finally said "oh, she charges $55". Oh the humiliation...this lady started going on and on about how that was ridiculous and she would NEVER pay that much for a haircut. Then everyone else sitting around us who had been listening started putting their two cents in about how nuts that was. I was so embaressed I just turned back around in my seat and kept to myself.
Oh and...
I've never been good with the coupons either.

Even a bad haircut works with a beautiful face like yours, Paige!

Talk to Cammi about the coupons, she's amazing and somehow finds every deal everywhere. I'm not very good at it but she promises personal lesson time!

I'm with you on the coupons - Its too much effort for me with very little results. Just the thought of it stresses me out - and my grocery store trips with 3 small kids are stressful enough!

Sorry about the haircut - but I bet you still look beautiful like always!

You crack me up! I couldn't stop laughing through your post. Just take prenatal vitamins. Your hair will grow like a weed. (That is what I try to do after a bad haircut--well, after I chop it all off because the bad cut drives me insane.)

Thanks. Mindy -- your haircut was worth every penny, you look so fabulous in those Christmas card photos!

My consolation is that it will grow back, just like it did last year.

Your description of the glammet reminds me of a story from my ward in Jersey City. In NYC, you couldn't get a decent basic haircut for less than $50 (and that didn't include tipping the stylist and the other girl that washed your hair and the one who dried it!) So, there was a woman in our ward who worked at the AVEDA flagship salon in Manhattan and every now and then would hold classes for other stylists on new cuts. Women in our ward could their hair cut free by being one of her "models"- the catch was you had to let her cut your hair however she wanted for her class. The Bishops' wife (who was 24- our bishop was 26) ended up with a style that would fit your glammet description. And then she was embarrassed to get it recut, b/c this was supposed to be a highly sought after hairstyle in NYC!

Paige - you are so funny!! I love the name you've dubbed your cut too :)

I'm totally on the coupon bandwagon but it took me a few months to figure out how to make it work for our family. And you have to actually like it. Otherwise, it's just a waste of time! But for example, yesterday I was able to buy 10 jars of Ragu spaghetti sauce and 9 boxes of cereal for less than $12 using coupons and the weekly sale. It helps me get a little into my food storage for cheap. And it's food we'll eat eventually anyway.

I kind of like the cut during some parts of the day but in general I don't want to look at this cut for another while. So I think I'll get it fixed by chopping of the "party in the back." But I still don't want to make this a $100 experience like last year's bad haircut. Eric offered to trim off the back...

paige, you are hysterical!
i thought your hair looked cute!
my worst haircut ever was my one and only visit to gene juarez.
i wanted to get my bangs layered like goldie hawn (this was 1991) and came out with a thick layer of butt-rocker bangs.
rob teases me about that hairstyle still...
